Chapter 3 Flashcards
(15 cards)
Crust
The top layer, composed almost entirely of light elements.
Lithosphere= earth’s outer layer
Mantle
The layer beneath the crust that makes up 68% of Earth’s mass
Consists of- asthenosphere and mesosphere
Asthenosphere
the layer beneathe the lithosphere that is a pliable, soft layer of mantle
mesosphere
layer beneath the asthenosphere
core
Earths innermost layer that consists of the outer core and inner core.
Outer Core= liquid nickel and iron
Inner core= solid liquid and iron
Structure of the Earth
Crust, mantle, core
Weathering
wears down rocks and makes them smooth as time passes
water and wind weathering do the same
Erosion
transports material from chemical weathering elsewhere
water-can change landscape like gorges or cliffs
wind-rock formations
atmospheric composition
nitrogen is 78% of earths atmosphere. The rest is oxygen, carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapor
Troposphere
layer nearest earth’s surface where weather occurs
stratosphere
the layer above the troposphere-temperature rises
Greenhouse effect
greenhouse gases absorb and reradiate infrared radiation near earth
layers of atmosphere
troposphere, stratosphere, ozone, mesosphere, thermosphere
water cycle
condensation, evaporation, precipitation
biosphere
narrow layer around earth where life can exist
