Chapter 3 Flashcards
(32 cards)
What are amino acids?
molecules that have two functional groups
- amine (-NH2)
- carboxyl (-COOH) or deprotonated version (COO-)
Whats the alpha carbon?
Carbon bonded to 4 different substituents and is a tetrahedral
-binded to amine, carboxyl, h, and and r-group
What do the r-groups give?
properties and function
How do you name?
start from the alpha carbon and go down the R-group
L vs D amino acids
L - if go to left (counterclockwise = S configuration)
D - R
How many non polar, aliphatic R-groups?
7
- water fearing want to be on inside
- nonpolar - exhibits no separation of charge, no net dipole
How many aromatic R-groups?
