25
What are some basic fire fighting techniques?
Remain cool and calm, act quickly and decisively Never turn your back on a fire Get as close as possible to the fire when discharging the extinguisher
26
What are some points on the use of a fire extinguisher?
Can be used on all fires Never in a person’s face Hold the extinguisher upright Start at the near edge and move side to side in a sweeping motion Start at the bottom and work upwards from side to side in a sweeping motion If a compartment, use door as a shield. Only open the door enough to insert the nozzle Be aware of lit particles rising and floating to spread the fire When fighting a compartment fire, hold the extinguisher at the highest part of the door to allow agent to settle onto the fire
27
How can smoke inhalation be prevented?
Use PBE Breathe through wet towels/cloths or headrest covers to filter the air and advise pax to do the same. Hold the cloth over nose and mouth Keep as low as possible as the cleanest air is closest to the floor. Advise pax to do the same
28
Two crew member primary fire fighter duties
``` Alert second crew member Collect nearest fire fighting equipment Fight fire immediately Do not leave location of fire Monitor fire Communicate with second crew member ```
29
Communicator/assist fire fighting duties two crew
Contact flight deck using interphone giving name and station Describe situation (smoke/fire) Give location of fire Describe colour and density of smoke Collect additional fire fighting equipment Move equipment away from the area Move pax away from the area Instruct pax to keep as low as possible and cover nose and mouth Monitor primary Follow up contact with the flight deck
30
Duties when fire is extinguished
Check that no reignition is possible - all burnt non electrical and embers should be thoroughly saturated Use water from the galley, toilet, coffee, tea, non alcoholic beverages
31
Fire drill - cool toilet door
Collect nearest fire fighting equipment Open door slightly using door as a shield, investigate location and source Discharge small amount of Halon or pour non alcoholic liquid onto the affected area Dampen area and monitor for reignition. Repeat as required
32
Fire drill - hot toilet door
Collect nearest fire fighting equipment Open door slightly using door as a shield - door handle may be hot Spray Halon into lavatory - ensure you stay low Close door and wait one minutes for Halon to take effect Fit PBE Open door and check fire is out Repeat as required, dampen area and monitor for reignition
33
Fire drill/immediate actions - cabin compartment/panels
Establish location and possible source of fire or smoke Collect nearest fire fighting equipment Call or signal nearest ABP to assist crew member to contact flight crew and monitor Fight fire/discharge Halon Maintain communication with ABP/flight crew
34
Waste bin fire immediate actions
Discharge small amount of Halon through waste bin flap Wait 30 seconds and verify fire is extinguished Do not pull the waste bin out to fight the fire Dampen area and monitor for reignition. Repeat as required
35
Clothing fire immediate actions
Smother fire using other clothing/jacket etc Prevent the person from moving about Saturate with cold water or non alcoholic beverages Administer first aid if necessary
36
Fire/smoke from electrical equipment immediate actions
Switch off electrical supply Notify flight crew Monitor for reignition and smoke has dispersed. Repeat if required
37
Rear cargo compartment fire - immediate actions
When notified of smoke or fire in rear cargo compartment Obtain Halon Insert nozzle into extinguisher connector access hole on bulkhead above cabin crew station Discharge entire Halon contents. Wait one minute for Halon to take effect Monitor for reignition
38
Rear cargo compartment fire. Secondary actions - single cabin crew
Obtain rear cargo door key, firefighting equipment and fit PBE Using the back of your hand check for any heat source Open door using it as a shield Investigate location/source of fire/smoke Discharge Halon as required Repeat if required, dampen area and monitor for reignition
39
Rear cargo compartment fire. Secondary actions - two crew
Open top of the security curtain slightly by pulling the access tab and insert nozzle Wait one minute. While waiting unlock the combination lock Reopen curtain slightly Establish if fire is extinguished Douse embers with non alcoholic liquids
40
Lithium battery overheating - immediate actions
Remove electrical power if applicable Ensure device is switched off Inform flight crew Allow adequate ventilation around the device Monitor If the device is in the flight deck it must be removed immediately prior to attempting to cool the device down
41
Lithium battery/PED fire - immediate actions
Remove electrical power if applicable Obtain fire fighting equipment If flames/smoke present fight the fire, spray BCF/Halon and fit PBE and protective gloves if required Saturate the device with non alcoholic liquid to cool cells and prevent ignition of adjacent cells Once device is cool remove gloves from the BCB, fit the gloves, place the device inside the BCB, securely fold the large flap onto the Velcro strip, secure the two side flaps onto the Velcro strip, place BCB in a standard unit and close the door, place standard unit on toilet floor and close toilet door, not allowing pax to access or use the toilet
42
What are post fire procedures?
Cabin crew report to the PIC Monitor the affected area until landing Administer first aid If smoke is severe the flight crew may vent the cabin When possible, keep a full extinguisher in its brackets close to the affected area should the situation flare up again
43
Unattended aircraft fire
Notify airport fire services Do not open doors If safe, close/shut any open exit doors
