Chapter 3 - Energy Resources Flashcards
(16 cards)
what is the name of non-renewable sources?
fossil fuels
what is wave power?
renewable energy generated from the sea/waves.
name some renewable energy sources
wind / solar / geothermal /nuclear / hydroelectric
name some non renewable energy sources
coal / gas / oil
Burning fossil fuels release carbon dioxide. why is this a problem?
The carbon dioxide leads to an increased greenhouse effect increasing global warming.
what can be done about burning fossil fuels releasing carbon dioxide?
using renewable sources like wind, solar, geothermal or nuclear power instead to produce less bi products
Burning fossil fuels release sulfur dioxide. why is this a problem?
It can produce acid rain and has a sharp choking smell.
what can be done to prevent the releasing of sulfur dioxide?
use sources that don’t release sulfur dioxide like renewable energy sources.
used fuel rods and other materials from. nuclear power stations need to be disposed of. why is this a problem?
They still give out radio waves so they can be stored in an area where the harmful rays harm humans and the enviroment.
How can we stop nuclear power stations causing so much harm?
nuclear power stations need to be built in an area where it is isolated so it doesnt affect people. Also the fuel rods need to be stored in an insulated bunk to keep from radiation leaks.
Accidents can happen at nuclear power stations. why is this a problem?
The accidents can kill and harm some peolle in an area of up to a quite large radius and wont affect future generations.
what xan we do about accidents at nuclear power stations?
there are no guarantees, but many saftey precausions are used and accidents are rare. steps can be taken after an accident to reduce garmful effects on humans.
what can be affected my droughts ?
hydroelectric power
what type of power can be noisy for people who live near by it?
wind power
what type of power only generates electricity during certain periods of the day?
tidal
what type of power can be affected by weather?
solar , wind , tidal
