Q

How to you change improper fractions into mixed numbers?

A

You count how many times the denominator goes into the numerator e.g 18/8 = 2 2/8 and simplify 2 2/8 = 2 1/4.

Q

How do you change a mixed fraction into an improper fraction?

A

Multiply the whole number (3 1/3) by the denominator (3) and add the numerator (1) to get a new numerator. Put new numerator over the original denominator ~ 10/3
e.g. 3 x 3 = 9
9 + 1 = 10

Q

What are the rules to adding fractions?

A

Sum: 2/3 + 4/5
1. You can’t add fractions unless they have the same denominator.
2. Find common denominator (C.D) 3 x 5 = 15
3. Change each fraction in the sum to have the C.D ~ 15
2/3 = 10/5 4/5 = 12/15
4. Replace fractions in sum with new fractions
10/15 and 12/15
5. Only add the numerators!
10/15 + 12/15 = 22/15
6. Simplify if possible
1 7/15

Q

What are the rules to subtracting fractions?

A
Sum: 3 2/3 - 2 1/2
1. Change to improper fractions
    11/3 and 5/2
2. Find the common denominator
    3 x 2 = 6
3. Multiply original numerator and denominator to get C.D 6 for denominators.
    22/6 - 15/6
4. Subtract numerators
    22/6 - 15/6 = 7/6
5. Simplify
     7/6 = 1 1/6

Q

How do you find a fraction of a number?

A
  1. Replace word OF with x
    e.g Find 3/10 of 80
    3/10 x 80/1 ~ cancels to: 3/1 x 8/1 = 24

Q

How do you express one quantity as a fraction of a second quantity?

A
  1. Put first quantity over second quantity in fraction form and simplify.
    e.g. Express 16 as a fraction of 24
    16/24 = 2/3
