Chapter 3: Histology Flashcards
(28 cards)
Adipose tissue
Connective tissue characterized by the presence of adipocytes(fat cells)
Subcutaneous. Serves as a stored source of energy
Apocrine secretion
Part of the cell breaks away to form the secretory product
Merocrine (eccrine) secretion
No visible part of the cell enters the secretory product
Holocrine
Cell dies and sloughs off to become the secretory product
Basic tissue
Epithelial, muscle, connective, and nervous
Biopsy
Removal of cell or tissue, usually for laboratory analysis
Blood
Liquid connective tissue.
Only body liquid with a high enough cell concentration to have the label “tissue”
Bone marrow tissue
Occupies the medullary cavities of bones.
Connective tissue
Bone tissue
Mineralized type of connective tissue.
Major structural component of bones
Cartilage
Firm connective tissue with unmineralized extracellular matrix.
Elastic cartilage
Contains elastic cartilage
Fibrocartilage
Contains collagenous fibers
Hyaline cartilage
Contains reticular fibers
Connective tissue proper (fibrous connective tissue)
Most widely distributed connective tissue, it forms part of every organ
Extracellular Matrix
Material outside of and between cells
Glandular epithelium
Epithelium specialized for secretion
Ground substance
The protein/polysaccharide component of the extracellular matrix.
Histology
The study of tissue (microscopic anatomy)
Membranous (surface) epithelium
Tissue that forms all outer surfaces of the body and lines all of its lumina and cavities.
Mesenchyme
Primitive connective tissue containing a large population of undifferentiated (stem) cells
Muscle tissue
Functionally specialized for contraction.
Skeletal muscle tissue
Voluntary and striated
Smooth muscle tissue
Involuntary, non striated
Cardiac muscle tissue
Involuntary, striated
