monomer for a carb?
monosaccharide
polymer for a carb?
polysaccharide
What enzyme is found in saliva?
Amalyse
Did dehydration synthesis or hydrolysis occur when the cracker was chewed?
Hydrolysis
What color was iodine and what did it indicate?
Yellow to purple
Indicates starch
What color was Benedict’s solution and what did it indicate?
Yellow to green
Indicates glucose
How does lactose intolerance occur?
People with lactose intolerance can’t make enough of/any lactase, which helps to digest the lactose sugar. The enzyme is needed to break the bond in lactose
What are the symptoms of lactose intolerance?
Gas, bloating, and diarrhea
What’s the monomer name for a protein?
An amino acid
What’s the polymer name for proteins?
Polypeptides
What was being tested in the enzyme lab?
To compare the amount of catalase made by and used by plant vs animal cells. Also, determine what affect cooking the cells has on the activity of catalase.
What is a catalase?
Speeds up the enzyme reactions
How do enzymes work to affect reactions and how activation energy is involved
There is an active site (which fits into the substrate (which is acted on by the enzyme) like a lock and key). Activation energy is used because it reduces the activation energy requirement
What’s the monomer name for fats?
Fatty acid
What are polymers of fats called?
Lipids
What kind of bonds does a saturated fatty acid have?
Single
What kind of bonds does an unsaturated fatty acid have?
Double
Examples of saturated fats
Butter, cheese, whole milk, fatty meats, oils like coconut and palm
Examples of unsaturated fatty acids
Fish, nuts
Pepsin levels of pH
1-5 best at 3
Trypsin levels of pH
4-9 best at 7
