Chapter 3- Organisation And The Digestive System Flashcards
(18 cards)
What is a tissue ?
A group of cells working together with a similar structure and function working together
Example: muscular tissue contraction to bring movement
What is an organ ?
Collections of tissues all working together to perform a specific function
What does glandular tissue do ?
Produces digestive juices to break down food
What is epithelial tissue ?
Covers the inside and the outside of the organs
What are the 3 types of organ systems ?
Digestive system/ circulatory system/gas exchange system
Salivary glands
Moistures food and releases enzymes to digest food
Oesophagus
Moves food into the stomache by peristalsis
Stomache
Churns food, kills harmful microbes provides optimum pH for stomache enzymes to break down food
Liver
Produces bile and neutralises stomache acids
Gall bladder
Stores the bile
Pancreas
Produces enzymes for the small intestine
Duodenum/large intestine
Absorbs water and solidifies waste
Small intestine
Absorbs soluable food
Anus
Releases waste
What is active site ?
The area on the substrate that the enzyme bonds to
Enzyme Substrate complex
Lock and key method, the substrate bonds to the enzyme
What do hydrogen bonds do ?
Keep the shape of the enzyme, however the bonds are weak and are effected by temperature and pH
Biological catalyst
Bring the activation energy down (less energy needed to start a reaction)
