What is a cam?
Similar to wheels they turn around an axle like a wheel but they’re not round
What is the function of the cam follower?
Rests on cam and keeps it down
What can also be used to hold a follower against a cam?
Spring
How is reciprocating motion created?
When the irregular shape of the cam pushes the follower up and down
What is the input motion?
Rotary motion
Describe the eccentric cam
Starts rotating at its lowest point (A) and gradually go higher towards B then gradually lower until it reaches its lowest point again
Describe a snail cam
Starts moving at its lowest point A. Gradually goes higher and higher up to its highest point B then suddenly drops down to A again
Describe a pear cam
rotates from A to B, it stays at its lowest point. When it rotates from B to A, it goes gradually up to its highest point and then down towards point A again
Describe a heart shaped cam
rotates from A to B, it is at its lowest point. When it rotates from B to A, it goes gradually up to its highest point, then down and up again. Then it goes to its lowest point at A and stays at the same height until it reaches B again
