chapter 3.5 - Factors affecting enzymes action Flashcards
(9 cards)
What two things effect enzyme action?
-temperature
pH
What is a DENATURED enzyme?
When the shape of an enzymes active site is changed, so the subtrate won’t fit anymore?
all enzymes have an __________ that they work best at
optimum temperature
Explain the effect of temperature on enzymes?
A higher temperature increases the rate at first
- If it gets too hot, some of the bonds holding the enzymes together break which changes the shape of the enzyme =Denatured
What is the perfect temperature for enzymes to work in humans?
37 degrees (human body temperature)
Why is it important to have enzymes?
none of the reactions in your body would happen fast enough to keep you alive.
Explain how pH effects enzymes?
If its too high or too low the pH interferes with bonds holding the enzyme together.
This changes the shape of the active sight = Denatured
What is usually the the optimum pH for enzymes to work their best?
neutral pH 7 but not always
What pH level does the enzyme pepsin (used to break down proteins in the stomach) work best at?
pH 2
