Chapter 4 - Acids and Redox Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is an acid?
H+ donor
What is a weak acid?
only releases a small proportion of its available hydrogen atoms.
partially dissociates/ionises
What is a strong acid?
Completely dissociates
What is reduction?
- gain of electrons
* decrease in oxidation number
What is oxidation?
- loss of electrons
* increase in oxidation number
What are reducing agents?
Reducing agents lose electrons and are oxidised themselves.
What are oxidising agents?
Oxidising agents gain electrons and are reduced themselves.
What can neutralise acids?
Alkalis or bases
Hydrochloric acid
HCl
Sulfuric acid
H₂SO₄
Nitric acid
HNO₃
Ethanoic Acid
CH₃COOH
Metal + Acid = ?
Salt + Hydrogen
Metal Oxide =
and
Metal Hydroxide(alkali) =
Salt and water
Metal carbonate + acid =
Salt + Carbon dioxide + water
Thinking about what ions form when they dissolve in water, why does mixing an acid and an alkali create a neutral substance?
- Acids form H+ ions when they dissolve in water
- Alkalis form OH- ions when they dissolve in water.
- H+ and OH- ions combine to form water
- Water is a neutral substance
What is a base
A H+ acceptor
