What is the sensitive period for canine?
its a time in the life of an animal when a small amount of experience of totl lack of experience will have a large effect of later behavior
When is Neonatal period and special in this stage?
0-14 days,
-deaf and blind
-urination and defecation dont occur spontaneously
-most of the time eating and sleeping
What is flexor dominance and when is it seen in dogs?
seen in 0-3 days when pup is picked up by scruff they flex their legs
What 2 reflexes are seen in dogs that are 3days-4weeks old?
Extensor dominance: extend legs when picked up
rooting reflex : pups push faces into cupped hand and crawl forward
What is the Magnus reflex and when does it happen?
first 2 week and up to 4 weeks
-its when pups head is turned to side, legs will extend on that side, and flex on the other side
What is the crossed extensor reflex?
when pup’s foot is pinched, its withdrawn and the other extended
Should cats and dogs be handled during this sensitive period?
yes, studies have shown they grow fast and more resistance to disease if they are handled during this period
WHen is transitional period and what do they do?
14-20 days
-eyes open at 10-16 days
-ears open at 14-18 days
-startle reflex to loud noise at 3 weeks
-urination and defecation occur spontaneously
-tooth eruption and chewing begins
-tail wagging at 2-3 weeks
-start eating and drinking on their own
When do pups startle at loud noise?
