Chapter 4 - Digestive System Flashcards
What is digestion
Digestion is the breakdown of large insoluble food molecules into small soluble food molecules
What are the 2 types of digestion
Physical : broken down by teeth and muscles in the digestive system
Chemical : broken down by enzymes
What is an enzyme
It is a biological catalyst
What is a catalyst
A catalyst is a substance that speeds up the rate of a reaction
Give an example of an enzyme
Amylase
How does amylase work
It is found in the saliva in the mouth and the small intestine. It breaks down starch into maltose
What is the substrate of amylase
The substrate is the substance on which the enzyme acts on
Substrate of amylase = starch
What is the product of amylase
The product is the substance that is formed as a result of a reaction
Product of amylase = maltose
Maltose is a reducing sugar
What are the stages in human nutrition
Ingestion
Digestion
Absorption
Egestion
Don’t forget the experiment for investigating the action of amylase on starch ( pg 28 )
Test tube A = saliva and starch solution ( add Benedicts solution after water bath. Then return to water bath )
Test tube B = water and starch solution ( add Benedicts solution after water bath. Then return to water bath )
Test tube C = half of test tube A ( after water bath with no Benedicts solution ) and a few drops of iodine
Test tube D = half of test tube B ( after water bath with no Benedicts solution ) and a few drops of iodine
What are the results for each test tube
Test tube A = changed from blue to red
Test tube B = stayed blue
Test tube C = stayed orange/brown
Test tube D = changed from orange/brown to black/purple
Don’t forget the conclusions
Don’t forget the conclusions
Remember diagram of digestive system
Remember diagram of digestive system
Function of the mouth
The food is chewed and mixed with saliva
Function of the oesophagus
Carries food from the mouth to the stomach my muscular action
