Abrogate
To put something to an end, By reaching an agreement dealing only with payments.
Ameliorate
To make something or unsatisfactory better.
Capital Offences
Any criminal charge which is punishable by the death penalty aka Capital Punishment.
Derogate
To detract or take away.
Example: To take away or diminish the rights of aboriginals.
Dissemination
To spread ideas widely over many groups and individuals.
Entrench
To place within for purposes of protection; in constitutional law, to protect or guarantee a right or freedom by ensuring that it can only be changed by an amendment to the constitution.
Extradition
Legal surrender of a fugitive to the jurisdiction of another state, country, or government for trial.
Example: If someone in Canada from another country committed a crime in that country they would have him extradited to face his punishment in the country he committed the crime in.
Franchise
The right to vote
Freedom
The right to conduct one’s circumstances that makes the performance of a contract impossible.
Inalienable Rights
entitlement that are guaranteed and cannot surrender or transfer to an other, for example, equality and liberty.
Interveners
Third-party participants in a legal proceeding; also called “friends of the court”.
Invoke
To put a law into affect.
Notwithstanding Clause
Section 33 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which allows federal and provincials governments to pass legislation that is exempt from s. 2 and ss. 7 to 15 of the Charter
Override
Use one’s authority to reject or cancel a decision.
Right
A legal, moral, or social claim that people are entitled to, primarily from their government.
