Chapter 5 Flashcards
(30 cards)
Arterial Fluid
Concentrated embalming chemical that is diluted with water for the solution used for arterial embalming.
Arterial Solution
Mixture of arterial fluid and water used for the arterial injection, may also include other fluids.
Cavity Fluid
Embalming chemical that is injected into the body cavity after aspiration.
Supplemental Fluid
A fluid that embalmers inject prior to the solution or adds to it for the purpose of enhancing the fluid.
Accessory Fluid
Chemical used in addition to vascular and cavity fluids included by not limited to hardening and powers.
Special Purpose Fluid
Fluids specially for special body conditions, jaundice, burns, decomp.
Formalin
A saturated solution of formaldehyde in water.
Paraformaldehyde
A solid form of formaldehyde.
Index
Strength of embalming fluid, showing how many grams of fluid are dissolved in 100 ml of water.
Donor compound
Embalming material that is placed in the abdomen when completing an autopsy.
Phenol
Antiseptic/disinfectant employed to dry most tissues and to bleach discolored skin.
Quats
Disinfectants that are used to clean the body for arterial injection.
Vehicles
Liquid that serves as a solvent for the numerous ingredients incorporated in embalming solution.
Dyes
Coloring agent, provides a color to the embalming solution.
Modifying agents
Chemical compounds of vascular fluid that control the rate and degree of tissue firmness by the fluid utilized.
Buffers
Embalming chemical that effects the stabilization of acid-base balance within embalming solution and in tissue.
Humectants
Chemical that increases the ability of the embalmed tissue to retain fluid.
Anti-coagulants
Fluid that stop the blood from clotting, making drainage much easier.
Surfactants
Chemicals that change the surface tension of a fluid so it is able to flow through different areas easier.
Pre-injection fluid
Fluid used to prepare the body and vascular system for injection, this fluid is injected before the preservative fluid.
Co-injection fluids
Fluid added to the primary dilution and injected at the same time.
Restorative Fluids
Fluids used with arterial fluids for the purpose of retaining fluids or moisture.
Dilution
Mixing of solution with fluids.
Primary Dilution
Dilution obtained while fluids are being mixed with water in the tank.
