What is Hardiness?
- cluster of stress-buffering traits consisting of commitment, challenges, control
- linked to lower levels of anxiety, adaptive coping styles
What is Resilience?
ability of some children to spring back form sometimes overwhelming stressors
What is Optimism?
shorter hospital stays, faster recoveries, longer and healthier lives
- positive emotions increase a person’s physical, cognitive, and social resource
What is Pessimism?
- attributions that are global, stable and internal
- tendency to ruminate
- anger, hostility, depression, smoking
What are 2 Types of Regulatory Control?
- good regulatory control
- too lose (undercontrolled)
What is Good Regulatory Control?
Good regulatory control- calmer, able to delay gratification, control emotions Too lose (Undercontrolled)- impulsive, unable to delay gratification, aggressive, venting
What is Too lose (Undercontrolled)?
impulsive, unable to delay gratification, aggressive, venting
What is Social Support?
companionship from others that convey emotional concern material assistance, or honest feedback
What is Emotion-Focused Coping?
coping with strategy in which a person tries to control his or her emotional response to a stressor:
- escape avoidance
- distancing
- positive reappraisal
What is Problem- Focused Coping?
coping strategy for dealing directly with a stressor by reducing its demands or increasing one’s resources for meeting those demands
What is Emotional Disclosure?
associated with a variety of positive health benefits
