Chapter 5 Flashcards
Compounds (16 cards)
Compound
when two or more elements are chemically combined
Molecule
the smallest uncharged individual unit of a compound formed by the union of two or more atoms
Subscripts
indicate how many of each atom
Law of Definite Composition
a compound always contains two or more elements chemically combined in a definite proportion by mass
Law of Multiple Proportions
atoms of two or more elements may combine in different ratios to produce more than one compound
Polyatomic ion
an ion that contains two or more elements
Ionic compounds
contain both a cation and an anion
Binary compounds
contain only two different elements
monatomic
consisting of one atom, one charge
Polyatomic
multiple different elements combine together
Type 1 metals
any metal that you know is charged (except Sn, Pb, and Bi)
Type 2 metals
transition metals, may have more than one charge values (except Ag, Zn, Cd)
Binary Acids
composed of a hydrogen and non-metal
Oxyacids
contain oxyanions - found in the polyatomic ions
Hydro + base name of nonmetal + -ic + acid
-ate
change the -ate to - ic
base name of oxyanion + -ic + acid
-ite
change -ite to -ous
base name of oxyanion + -ous + acid
