Chapter 5- Adverse Drug Effects And Drug Interactions Flashcards
(11 cards)
Side Effects
Predictable drug effects that may occur even at therapeutic doses
What is FAERS
The FDA’s Adverse Event Reporting System
Drug Allergies
Common event, defined as a hyper response of body defenses to a particular drug that may result in a diverse range of pt symptoms
Drug interaction
When a medication interacts with another substance such as another drug, dietary supplement, herbal product, or food that is taken concurrently with the medication, and the drug’s actions ARE affected
Idiosyncratic response
An adverse drug effect that produces unusual and unexpected symptoms that are not related to the pharmacologic action of the drug
Teratogens
Agents that cause birth defects
What is the relation of GFR to drug excretion?
The higher the GFR, the more rapid the excretion
Additive Effect
Two drugs from a similar therapeutic class produce a combined summation response (used extensively in the tx of HTN)
Synergistic Effect
Drug interaction that produces an enhanced response. The effect of the two drugs is greater than would be expected from simply adding the two individual drugs’ responses
Antagonistic Effect
Drug interaction that occurs when adding a second drug results in a diminished pharmacologic response (can result in drugs being “canceled”)
What does it mean when a drug handbook states adverse effects are “dose related?”
As the dose increases, the risk of adverse effects also increases
