chapter 5 - IV Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is IV therapy?
IV therapy is a parenteral drug delivery method that provides drugs and fluids by the intravenous (IV) route.
What are the purposes of IV fluids?
IV fluids may be given alone to hydrate the patient or to place drugs directly into the patient’s system.
When is IV therapy used?
IV therapy is used when the patient is unable to take the drug orally or when the drug can’t be absorbed by mouth.
What factors determine the speed of an IV infusion?
The speed of an IV infusion depends on the reason for having it.
What is an infusion?
An infusion is when IV fluids go directly into a vein and thus immediately into the bloodstream.
What is the potential risk of IV infusion?
There is a potential for severe and immediate adverse reactions.
What does ‘volume’ refer to in IV therapy?
Volume refers to the amount of fluids prescribed to be infused.
What does ‘duration’ mean in the context of IV therapy?
Duration refers to how long in minutes or hours an IV infusion is prescribed to run.
What is flow rate in IV therapy?
Flow rate is how fast an IV infusion is prescribed to run, measured in milliliters (mL) delivered in 1 hour.
What is the drop factor?
The drop factor is the number of drops (gtts) needed to make 1mL of IV fluid.
How does tubing diameter affect IV flow rate?
The diameter of the tubing affects the rate of flow; larger diameter tubing allows bigger drops and a larger amount of fluid into the body.
What are the types of tubing sizes in IV therapy?
Tubing sizes are divided into macro drip and micro drip, each having different types of drip chambers.
What is a drip chamber?
A drip chamber is a clear cylinder of plastic attached to IV tubing.
What is a drip rate?
Drip rate is the number of drops per minute needed to make the IV infuse in the prescribed amount of time.
How are most IV fluids regulated today?
The vast majority of IV fluids today are regulated by either a pump or a controller.
What is extravasation?
Extravasation is when medication or IV leaks from the vein into surrounding tissues, causing severe tissue damage.
What is infiltration in IV therapy?
Infiltration occurs when IV fluids leak, causing inflammation inside the tissue.
