Chapter 5 Quantum Mechanics Flashcards
(19 cards)
What is the formula to find energy
E= hc/wavelength
E=(h)(frequency)
What’s the formula to find wavelength when energy is included
Wavelength= hc/E
What is a quantum
The amount of energy used to love an electron from one energy level to another
What is a probability cloud
The probability of finding an electron at a point
How many electrons can one orbital hold
2
What is the Aufbau principle
Electrons fill the lowest energy level first (from the ground up)
What is the Pauli Exclusion Principle
Only 2 electrons per orbital w/ opposite spins
What’s Hund’s Rule
Electrons enter orbitals unpaired until all orbitals are full
What is the formula to find wavelength
Wavelength= c/frequency
What’s the formula for frequency
Frequency= c/wavelength
List the radiations from lowest frequency to highest frequency
- Radio
- Microwave
- Infrared
- Visible light (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet)
- Ultraviolet
- X-ray
- Gamma
What are the 5 orbitals
S P D F G
How many electrons are allowed on the p suborbital
6
How many electrons are allowed the the d suborbital
10
How many electrons are allowed in the f suborbital
14
How many electrons are allowed in the s suborbital
2
Explain emission
When an electron drops an energy level or it becomes quantized (which means it moves from one energy level to another) it emits a photon of energy equal to the quantum drop
Explain absorption
When a quantum matches one in the atom it absorbs the energy and jumps to another energy level or becomes quantized (the electron moves from one energy level to another)
What is the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle
It is impossible to know both the position and the momentum of an electron at the same time
