Chapter 5 ( Storage And Protection) Flashcards
What is the purpose of preserving aero-engines?
To protect the interior and exterior surfaces from corrosion caused by air and moisture.
What can damage surfaces coated with lubricating fluids?
Certain additives in the fluids can react with the surface if the engine is not used for a certain period.
What is the general policy for the storage and preservation of aero-engines?
It is outlined in the relevant engine maintenance procedures.
What must be done for engines in Immediate Readiness Reserve?
Engines must be preserved in accordance with the relevant engine publications.
How is an engine classified if it is out of use for less than one month?
It is considered to be in short or medium term Reserve.
What are the options for preserving an engine in short/medium term Reserve?
- Run the engine at least every 14 days.
- Inhibit the engine fuel system if running is not possible.
- Turn the engine by hand every day if neither is practical.
What defines Long Term Reserve for aero-engines?
It is the storage of engines that will be out of use for longer than one month, usually removed from the aircraft.
What is the procedure for placing an engine in long term reserve?
- Inhibit the fuel system with oil.
- Fill the oil system with oil according to AMM.
- Ensure blanks are fitted to all openings.
- Apply padding to sharp projections and locking wire.
- Place the engine in a water vapour resistant bag in its stand.
- Insert desiccant silica gel and moisture indicator into the bag.
- Seal the bag.
What should be done with the moisture indicator in long term storage?
Inspect the moisture indicator at regular intervals.
What is the procedure for returning an engine?
Return through stores in the relevant specific authorised container protective materials.
How should the internal engine be prepared?
Internally engine ground run (Dried out - Free from moisture). Sprayed internally with PX24.
What is the cleaning procedure for external surfaces?
Clean external surfaces with white spirit and blow dry with compressed air.
What oils are used for inhibiting the engine fuel system?
Light mineral oils such as OM 11 and OM 13 are used for inhibiting the engine fuel system. Ensure that the fuel is not contaminated with water.
What type of grease should be used for controls and linkages?
A low temperature grease such as XG 275 or XG 287 can be used. This is applied using a stiff brush to unmasked control joints.
What is a Water Vapour Resistant (WVR) Bag?
An engine must be placed in a WVR bag if it is to be out of service for more than a month. It is also used for transportation of an engine.
What are the features of a WVR bag?
The WVR bag is made from -plastic and is
-resistant to oils, fuel, and moisture vapours.
-It has a self-sealing zip fastener,
-two transparent panels, -three pockets for instructions,
-reinforcing plates, and a
-relief valve.
What is the purpose of silica gel in a WVR bag?
Silica gel is used as a moisture absorbent. It is important that exposure to the atmosphere is kept to a minimum.
What is the warning regarding desiccant usage?
Obey the precautions that follow when you use desiccant.
What precautions should be taken when handling desiccant?
Apply a barrier cream to your hands and all your skin the desiccant can touch. Do not let the desiccant touch your skin or eyes.
What personal protective equipment is recommended when using desiccant?
Put on gloves and chemical-proof eye protection.
What is important about the work area when using desiccant?
Make sure the work area has a good flow of air.
What should you avoid doing with desiccant dust?
DO NOT BREATHE THE DUST
How should desiccant be stored?
Do not remove bags of new desiccant from their sealed container until you want to use them.
What is the maximum time allowed between opening and closing the desiccant container?
Make sure the time between when you open and close the container is not more than 10 minutes.
