define groups

define primary groups vs. secondary groups with examples
primary: intimate, close-knit groups
- family, close friends and spouses
secondary: larger, impersonal, goal-oriented
- coworkers and classmates

define anomie
the feeling of being disconnected from group life
define in-groups vs. out-groups
in-groups: where an individual feels a sense of belonging like a religion or sports fan
out-groups: often perceived as outsiders and “them” like fans of an opposing sports team
what is the asch line experiment?
- explored conformity
- only one participant in which they were asked to pick a line, the other participants were actors and chose the wrong line
- 75% of participants chose the wrong line in order to conform
what is the milgram experiment
- studied obedience
- had a person “shock” a student everytime they anwered a question wrong, 65% shocked the student to the highest shcok level because they were told to do so
what is the stanford prison experiment
- percieved power and authority
- showed how quickly roles of power and submission took over ones identity
- was supposed to last 2 weeks but only lasted 6 days
- guards were abusive and prisoners had mental breakdowns
