chapter 5 - The psychobiological process of memory Flashcards
(57 cards)
What is memory?
Memory is the processing, storage and retrieval of information acquired through learning
What is encoding?
Converting info to a usable form for storage
What is storage?
Retaining information in memory
What is retrieval?
Information recovered from memory when needed
What is the Atkinson-Shiffrin multi-store model of memory?
Memory consists of three separate stores – sensory memory, short-term memory, and long term memory. Each store differs in terms of its function, capacity, and duration. However, all three operate simultaneously and interact with one another
What are the three memory stores?
Sensory memory
Short - term memory
Long - term memory
What are the key features of sensory memory?
Function: Receives sensory information from the environment.
Capacity: Potentially unlimited.
Duration: Momentarily. Iconic Memory (stores images for approximately 0.2 seconds) and echoic memory (stores sounds for approximately 3-4 seconds).
What are the key features of short - term memory?
Function: Receives information from sensory memory and maintains it in conscious awareness for immediate use. It also transfers information to and from LTM.
Capacity: 7 ± 2 pieces of information.
Duration: 18-20 seconds, up to 30 seconds.
What are the key features of long - term memory?
Function: Stores information for re-access and use at a later time.
Duration: Potentially permanent. Some information may be lost over time if not accessed/used.
Capacity: Potentially unlimited.
What are the types of Long - term memory?
