Old immigrants
By the late 1800s, immigrants from northern Europe were known as old immigrants.
New immigrants
Were from southern and eastern Europe,these included Czechs, Greeks, Hungarians,Italians,Poles,Russians, and Slovaks who came to the United States.
Steerage
An area below a ship’s deck where steering mechanisms were located. Most immigrants traveled in Steerage because tickets were inexpensive.
Benevolent Societies
Some immigrant communities formed these aid organizations that offered immigrants help in case of sickness, unemployment, or death
Tenements
poorly built, overcrowded apartment buildings.
Sweatshops
often associated with the clothing industry, these types of workplaces had long hours, and hot unhealthy working conditions
Chinese Exclusion Act
banning Chinese people from immigrating to the United States for 10 years. This law marked the first time a nationality was banned from entering the country

public transportation designed to move many people
Suburbs
residential neighborhoods outside of downtown areas that had began springing up before the Civil War

Leisure and cultural activities shared by many people
Joseph Pulitzer
he added a color comic to his New York World Newspaper. More people started buying his Pultizer’s paper
William Randolph Hearst
publisher of the New York Journal, saw that comics helped sell newspapers so he added color comic strips to the journal

giant retail shops, appeared in some cities during the late 1800s

landscape architect, who designed central park in New York City, as well as many state and national parks

became famous for exposing the horrible conditions in New York City tenements
Settlement Houses
neighborhood centers in poor areas that offered education, recreation, and social activities.
Jane Adams
This woman along with Ellen Gates Starr moved into a run down building in a poor Chicago neighborhood and turned it into Hull House.
Hull House
The most famous settlement house of the period
Florence Kelley
One important reformer at Hull House. She visited sweatshops and wrote about the problems there. Her work helped convince lawmakers to take action, Illinois passes a low in 1893 to limit working hours for women and to prevent child labor.
