two major groups of organs that make up human digestive system
alimentary canal, accessory organs
alimentary canal (ref: 1 of 2 major organ groups of digestive system)
organs through which food passes (oesophagus, stomach, intestines)

aid in digestion but do not transfer food (salivary glands, pancreas, liver, gall bladder)
oesophagus
tube connecting oral cavity to stomach (separated from trachea by the epiglottis)
food mixed with saliva then move in a bolus w action of peristalsis
peristalsis
action when food is mixed with saliva and moved in bolus
stomach
temporary storage tank where food mixed by churning + digestion begins
its lined w gastric pits releasing digestive juices, creating an acidic environment (ph ~ 2)
small intestine
long highly folded tube where usable food substances (nutrients) = absorbed
consisting of 3 sections: duodenum, jejunum, ileum
large intestine
final section of alimentary canal, where water + dissolved minerals = absorbed
Consists of ascending / transverse / descending / sigmoidal colon, + rectum
