chapter 6 - 2 Flashcards

1
Q

How does the solubility of a polyampholyte vary with pH? Explain your answer.

A

In the IEP the molecule aggregate and is least soluable, moving away from the IEP the electrostatic repulsion becomes high so the polymer is more soluable

Q

How does the viscosity of a solution of a polyampholyte vary with ionic strength?
Explain your answer.

A

When adding salt, the electrostatic repulsion between the polymers becomes high; when the repulsion is at maximum; the radius is at maximum and takes up much space. Then the viscosity is at maximum.
When the repulsion is higher than the attraction the molecule breaks and becomes less viscous

Q

How does c* of a polyampholyte vary with pH ? Explain your answer.

A

When the solution is at IEP the aggregation of the polymer is highest and there will fit more polymers in the solution; so at IEP the c* is highest. Moving away from the IEP the polymers take up more space and the c* becomes lower

Q

How does c* of a polyampholyte vary with ionic strength? Explain your answer.

A

When adding salt the polymers become bigger because of the electrostatic repulsion. When the viscosity is highest c* is lowest.
