Chapter 6 Flashcards
(24 cards)
What is a computer network
is a collection of computers that communicate with each other over transmission lines or wirelessly
types of computer network
WAN, LAN, The internet and Internets
LAN ( Local Area Network)
connects computers that reside in a single geographic location on the premises of the company that operates the LAN
- Number of computer can range from 1 to several hundreds
- distinguishing characteristic: single location
WAN (Wide area network)
- connects computers at different geographic location
Intranet
a private internet that is used exclusively within an organization
internet
a network of networks
-connects LANs, WANs, and other internets
the Internet
- the most famous internet
- the collection of networks that you use when you send email or access a web site
protocol
a set of rules that programs on tow communicating devices must follow
layered protocol
used to provide seamless flow of information for the large variety of communication methods and conventions used on the internet
SOHO
- small office or a home office
- such LAN’s have fewer than a dozen computers or printers
- can use wired and wireless connectivity
switch
a special purpose computer that receives and transmits wired traffic on the LAN
LAN device
a small computer than contains: a switch, a device for wireless communication, a device or connecting to a WAN and via that WAN to the internet
LAN devices and SOHO
-they are typically provided by the phone or cable vendor
NIC
- network interface card
- found on wired devices on a LAN
- a device that connects the computers or printers circuitry to the network wires
- Works with the programs in each device to implement the protocols necessary for communication
On-board NIC
a NIC built into the computers circuitry
What types of wires are wired LAN connections made with?
UTP - Un-shielded twisted pair
Optical Fiber cables
UTP
contains set of wires that are twisted together to improve signal quality
optical fiber cables
- if connections in a LAN carry a lot of traffic, this may be used
- light ray signals, and they are reflected inside the glass core of the optical fiber cable
WNIC
a devices on a LAN connected wireless have a WNIC
- wireless NIC
Access Point
component of the LAN device that processes wireless traffic and communicated with the wired switch
Ethernet
- specifies hardware characteristics such as which wire carries which signal
- also describes how messages are to be packages and processed for wired transmission over the LAN
10/100/1000 Ethernet
allows for transimission at a rate of 10, 100, 1000 Mbps (megabits per second)
- switches detect what speed a device can handle and communicate with it at that speed
blue tooth
- another wireless protocol
- designed fro transmitting data over short distances, replacing cables
ISP (internet service provider)
- provides ou with alegitimate internet address
- serves as your gateway to the internet
- pays for the internet
