Chapter 6 Flashcards
(36 cards)
Classes Of neurons
Neurons are classified by the number of projections
Unipolar Neuron
Contact Senses (the sense of touch, one projection sensory neuron)
Bipolar Neuron
Distances Senses (detecting objects far away vision, hearing, smell) (two projections)
Multipolar Neuron
Motor neurons in PMS ( more than two things growing from soma)
Interneuron
Found in the CNS for processing information
Local-circuit Interneurons
Process Information (star shaped)
Projection Interneurons
Carry information to spinal cord ( pyramid shaped, long axons)
Purkinje cells
Carry information from cerebellum to other parts of brain and the spinal cord (fan shaped body with a lot of dendrites)
Soma
cell body of a neuron contains the nucleus and other structures common to living cells
Nucleus
ontains the genetic material in the form of chromosomes.
Axon
transmit messages
Dendrite
Receive chemical messages
Axon Hillock
Biological decision maker it decides wether or not to pass on a message
Myelin Sheath
Speeds up neuroconduction, provides electrical instillation
Node of Ranvier
gaps of myelin sheath, areas where axon is showing
Axon Terminal
conducts electrical signals to a nerve synapse
Microtubules
Transports material from the soma to the axonal ending and back
Synaptic Vesicles
Special membrane bubbles containing neurotransmitters
Anterograde Transport
Information goes from soma to the axonal ending
Retrograde Transport
Information going back to the soma
Neuroglial Cells
Like glue, Outnumber neurons 10-1
Astrocytes
provide energy to neurons (star shaped)
Oligodendrocytes
Creates myelin sheath for axons in CNS
Microglial Cells
act as a scavenger helps remove dead tissue in brain and act as a mild immune system by inducing inflammation
