Chapter 6 Flashcards
What are the different bonds and what are their properties?
- ionic- metals and non metals
- covalent- non metals and non metals
- metallic- metals and metals
What bonds best with heat and electricity?
Metallic
What is chemical bonds?
Atoms that naturally link with other atoms
What happens to atoms with few valence electrons?
They loose electrons
What happens to atoms with more valence electrons?
They steal electrons
Metallic electrons act as what?
Glue to hold positively charged metal ions together
What acts as a glue?
De localized electrons
What is polarity?
Covalent and ionic bonds are affected by a property
What is the octet rule?
a full valence shell contains eight electrons. Thus, by attaining a full valence shell, atoms maximize stability
What are two diatomic elements?
- hydrogen
- oxygen
- chlorine
What are some properties of covalent compounds?
- weak
- poor electrical and heat conductors
- distinct molecules are held together by intermolecular theory
What are some properties of network covalent?
- these are the exceptions
- they have continuous 3-D patterns (crystals, diamonds)
- hard, brittle, high melting point, and a glossy luster.
What are some properties of ionic?
- strong bonds
- high melting and boiling points
- hard solids, can be split, water soluble, conduct heat and electricity
What are some properties of metallic?
- help carry electrons
- ductile
- malleable
