What does a simple machine do?
A simple machine multiplies the effect of an applied force
What is work equal to?
Work = Force x Distance
What forces do work?
Forces parallel to motion
What is power?
Power is the rate of doing work
Power (W) = Work / Time
What is negative work?
The work done by a force acting in a direction opposite to the object’s motion
When does potential energy increase?
If work is done but no kinetic energy is gained
What is potential energy?
Potential energy implies storing energy to use later for other purposes
What are conservative forces?
Conservative forces are forces for which the energy can be completely recovered
e.g. gravity and elastic forces
When does Simple harmonic motion occur?
Simple harmonic motion occurs when the energy of a system repeatedly changes from potential energy to kinetic energy and back again
