Chapter 6- Integumentary System Flashcards
(26 cards)
What is the skin’s major function?
To protect the internal body parts from mechanical injury, infection, excessive heat or cold and dehydration
What are the types of invertebrate integument?
Protozoans, coelenterates, insects, arthropods
What are the parts of the skin?
Epidermis (scarf), dermis (cutis vera or corium) and hypodermis
It is thinnest on the eyelids and thickest on the palms and soles of the feet
Epidermis
What are the layers of the epidermis?
Stratum Corneum, Stratum Lucidum, Stratum Granulosum, Stratum Spinosum and Stratum Germinativum
What vitamins that will proceed to the fats if taken excessively?
Vitamins A, D, E and K
Epidermis is avascular which means?
There is absence of blood vessels
Dermis is vascular which means?
It is filled with blood vessels
What color does a cyano, erythro and xantho have?
Cyano- Blue
Erythro- red
Xantho- yellow
How many minutes does it take to be able to synthesize vitamins D from the sunlight?
10 minutes
Melanocytes are pigments that have 3 types. What are these?
Melanin, Carotene and Albino
Snake is to molting as human is to?
Desquamation
What is the largest organ and what are its derivatives?
Skin and its derivatives are the hair and nails
What do you call the bending of bones due to lack of exposure to sunlight?
Rickets or Genu Varus
Two types of dermis and describe
Stratum Spongiosum- borders the epidermis. Loose
Stratum Compactum- More compact
Where are tattoos and fingerprints found?
Dermis
What is the most superficial layer?
Dermis
Enumerate the different sensory nerve endings
Pacinian Corpuscles for pressure Krause's end bulb for Cold sensation Ruffini end bulbs for heat sensation Free nerve endings for pain Meissner's corpuscles for light touch
It is adjacent to the dermis and contains epidermal cells that undergo cell division called mitosis. This deep layer also produce melanin
S. Germinativum
How many weeks does it take to produce new skin?
2 weeks
What are the parts of the hair?
Medulla (soft core or center)
Cortex (hard core, stiffness)
Cuticle (outermost)
They produce an oily secretion which prevents hair from getting dry and brittle
Sebaceous or oil glands (sebum)
What bacteria is naturally found in the face when dirt an oil is combined, this produces pimples
Staphylococcus aureus
Acts as an emergency mechanism when it is necessary for the body to lose heat and this secretes sweat or perspiration
Sudoriferous or sweat glands
