chapter 6 science Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is matter?
matter is anything has mass and volume
Matter Tree
Matter, mixtures, pure substances, mechanical mixtures solutions, elements, compounds.
Pure Substance (Element)
Matter that contains 1 type of particle.
- A pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substance.
-Examples: Hydrogen / sodium / oxygen / chlorine
Pure Substance (Compound)
-A pure substance that contains 2 or more elements in a fixed ratio
-Examples: Salt / Sugar / Water / Carbon dioxide
Element
Only 1 type of atom.
Compound
Two or more different elements combined chemically in a fixed ratio.
Mixtures
Matter that contains 2 or more different types of particles.
Solutions (Homogeneous Mixture)
A mixture with only 1 phase (different substances are not visible)
Examples: Salt water / sugar water.
Mechanical Mixtures (Heterogeneous Mixture)
A mixture with more than 1 phase (different substances are visible)
Examples: Rock & Water / Sand & Stones.
Atom
A particle found in matter.
Molecule
Two or more atoms.
What is a molecule?
A molecule is a group of atoms that share electrons. This group of atoms can be of the same element or different elements.
What is a molecular compound?
A molecular compound is made from 2 or more non-metals sharing electrons. Generally, molecular compounds form between two different non-metals. The attraction between atoms is called a covalent bond.
