The left kidney is slightly higher than the right due to the large amount of room the liver takes up. Situated behind the peritoneal sack and are often described as retroperitoneal organs.

the concavity on the medial side of the kidney is where the hilum is positioned. through the hilum all the structures, such as blood vessels, nerves, and the ureters enter and leave the kidney.
