Fasting
- Refers to no food or drinks ( except water)
- fast 8-12 hrs
- If patient has eaten and test needs to be done non fasting must be written on requisition or directly on specimen
Basal state
Blood collected early morning approximately 12 hrs after food intake

A hemolysis specimen can lead to falsely increase results for

If you puncture a nerve
Patient will feel a sharp radiating pain and the procedure should be discontinue

Results when RBC’s are lysed (destroyed)
Turbid or Lipemic serum
Appears cloudy or milky and can be a result if bacterial contamination or high lipid levejd in the blood.

Increase in red blood cells and other cells and solids in blood from lord of Fluid in surrounding tissues around puncture site
Collapsed veins
When blood is withdrawn to quickly or forcefully during venipuncture
