Chapter 7 Flashcards
Science (44 cards)
What is stimulus
A change or signal in the environment that an organism can recognize and react to
What is a response
A reaction to stimulus
What is a neuron
A cell that carries informantion through your nervous system
What is a nerve impulse
The message that a neuron carries
What is dendrite
A branchlike structure that picks up the impulses that then move to the axon
What is an axon
A long structure leading away from the cell body is sent to the tip of the neuron
What is a nerve
A bundle of nerve fibers; carries nerve impulses through the body :)
What is a sensory neuron
It picks up stimulus and converts it into a nerve impulse
What is an interneuron
Carries a nerve impulse to another interneuron of motor neuron
What is a motor neuron
Sends impulse to a muscle or gland enabling it to respond
What is a synapse
A place where a neuron transfers an impulse to another structure
What is the central nervous system
Includes the brain and spinal cord and acts like a traffic cop
What is the peripheral nervous system
Includes all the nerves outside of the CNS
What is the brain
The control center
What is the spinal cord
A thick colum of nervous tissue that links the brain to the PNS
What is the cerebrum
Part of the brain the helps sense, controls movement, and helps with thinking, learning, and memory
What is cerebellum
Coordinates your muscle actions and keeps you balanced
What is the brain stem
Connects your brain to your spinal cord
What is the somatic nervous system
Controls voluntary movemnets Ex. Using a fork
Automatic nervous system
Controls your body’s involuntary movements Ex.Breathing, Heart bet
What is a reflex
An automatic response that occurs rapidly without conscious control
What is a concussion
Occurs when the soft tissue of the brain is bruised as it collides with the skull
What is the cornea
The clear tissue that covers the front of the eye
What is the pupil
The opening through which light enters the eye
