Chapter 7 Flashcards

1
Q

Explain and discuss the Lean philosophy, with emphasis on how this philosophy challenges traditional approaches to manufacturing and service delivery.

A

Scrap and rework is deemed wasteful. Lean system focuses on smaller batch sizes and better quality to use sometimes limited resources better.

Q

Discuss waste in operations, including its definition relative to Lean and JIT and how waste is viewed from a value-analysis perspective.

A

Waste is anything that doesn’t add value. JIT is just in time which means to produce at a level to eliminate over production and inventory.

There is seven components of Muda.

  1. Overproduction
  2. Waiting for processing
  3. Unnecessary Transport
  4. Over-processing due to poor design
  5. Inventories more than minimum needed
  6. Unnecessary movement by employees
  7. Production of Defects

Q

Understand Kanban system, what is Kanban? How does it work, what is its impact?

A

The Kanban system uses cards other signals with carts to indicate levels of inventory at work stations. If the work station is getting low a new card is displayed indicating how many more supplies are needed to be full. It allows workstations just to have enough inventory to complete their job and reduces waste. and efficiency.

Q

Discuss the relationship between setup time and production batch size, especially the benefits of reducing both.

A

Setup is non-value added time
When setup time is minimal, willingness to produce small lots increases
Small lots mean less inventory on both production and supply sides

Q

Describe the implications of a Lean system on the employees.

A

To have multi-function workers who are cross-trained for more responsibility. The lean system basis pay off how many jobs they can do instead of seniority. Lean systems may have drawbacks with dealing with unions because they don’t encourage cross training. Some employees may not do well with the Lean System.
