Chapter 7 Flashcards
(17 cards)
The ratio of successive terms of a geometric sequence
Common Ratio
A special application of exponential growth
Compound interest
A monomial that is a real number
Constant
If a^3=b, then “a” is the ________ of b
Cube Root
When an initial amount decreases by the same percent over a given period of time
Exponential Decay
An equation in which the variables occur as exponents
Exponential equations
A function that can be described by an equation of the form y=x^x, where a>0 and “a” does not equal 1.
Exponential Function
When an initial amount increases by the same percent over a given period of time
Exponential Growth
A sequence in which each term after the first is found by multiplying the previous term by a constant “r”, called the common ratio
Geometric Sequence
A number, a variable, or a product of a number and one or more variable
Monomial
For any real number, “a” does not equal 0, and any integer “n”, a^n = 1/a^n and 1/a-^n = a^n
Negative Exponent
If a^n=b for a positive integer n, then “a” is an nth root of b
nth Root
Of any quantity is the number rounded to the nearest power of 10
Order of Magnitude
For any positive real number “b”, and any integer “m” and “n”>1, b m/n = (n is the square root of b)^m or “n” is the square root of “b^m”. M/n is a rational exponent (behaves like integer exponents)
Rational exponent
Each term is formulated from one or more previous terms
Recursive Formula
A number in scientific notation is expressed as “a” times 10^n, where 1 _ is an integer
Scientific Notation
For any nonzero number a^o=1. Any nonzero number raised to the zero power is equal to 1
Zero Exponent
