Chapter 7 Flashcards
(23 cards)
Colloid
A mixture of tiny partials that are intermediate in size between those in solutions and those in suspension in a liquid solid or a gas
Emulsion
A mixture of two or more Immiscible liquids in which one liquid is dispersed in the other
Solution
A homogeneous mixture of two or more substances uniform ally dispersed throughout a single phrase
Solute
In a solution the substance that dissolves in the solvent
Solvent
In a solution the substance in which the solute dissolves
Alloy
Solid or liquid mixture or two or more metals
Heterogeneous mixture
mixture that composes of components that aren’t uniform or they have localized regions that all have different properties.
Decanting
Process of pouring lighter liquid off of a heavier liquid
Immiscible
Two liquids that do not mix
Tyndall effect
When the partials are large enough to scatter light that passes through a colloid
Hydrogen bonding
electrostatic attraction between polar groups
Polar compound
Molecular that has an eneven distibution of electrons
Non polar compound
A compound whose electrons are equally distributed among its atoms
Solubility
A maximum amount of a solute that will dissolve in a given quantity of solvent at a given temperature and pressure
Concentration
The amount of a particular substance in a given quantity of a mixture solution or ore
Unsaturated solution
A solution that contains less solute than a saturated solution does and that is able to dissolve additional solute
Saturated solution
Solution that cannot dissolve any more solute under the given conditions
Supersaturated solution
A solution that holds more dissolved solute than is required to reach equilibrium at a given temp.
Molarity
An expression of concentration of a solution in moles of dissolved solute per liter of solution
Insoluble
Do not dissolve
Soluable
Dissolve easily in water
Dilute
Solution that contains only small amounts of a solute
Suspension
A mixture in which partials of a material are more or less evenly dispersed through a liquid or gas
