gesture
a variety of nv behavior: Involve hands & face and Typically intentional
functions of gesture:
Used to accent, contradict, clarify, repeat, etc.
Speech independent AKA emblems AKA autonomous gestures
non verbal acts that have a direct verbal translation ex: goodbye, v for victory, peace, etc
Speech related gestures/illustrators
tied or accompany speech
referent related gestures
pointing movement, abstract ideas such as drawing your picture in space
gestures indicating a speaker’s relationship to the referent
hand movements suggesting i know this, i don’t know this, i got this, i have a great idea, etc.
Punctuation gestures
accent, emphasize and organize important segments of the discourse; NOTregulators
interactive gestures
only occur in presence of other;
- delivery gestures acknowledge types of gestures that acknowledge delivery of info
- citing gestures - refer to previous comment
- seeking gestures - seeking participation or reassurance
- turn gestures - taking turns

Varies culturally, age, & task, Related to personality and People gesture more if they are trying to control you
self-synchrony
phonemic clause - smalles idea unit in spoken language
kinetic markers - mark a specific oral language behavior
Interaction synchrony (matching and meshing)
Matching: mimic mannerisms of people we interact with aka chameleon effect
mimicry: unaware and increases liking for interaction
Meshing: kind of like courtship
