(6 cards)
What happens in chapter 7
Night - remembers Moira, and considers the nature of the narrative she is telling
‘The night is my ________. Where should ____?
time out, I go?
In the Handmaids Tale, night often represents Offred’s ability to think Freely. Always alternating between night and day, Atwood’s book mirrors that of a normal day, enhancing the sense of intimacy between reader and Offred.
Furthermore, the night chapters can be viewed as always sandwiched between two controlling chapters.
Ironic as well that her freedom exists only in the realm of her mind
‘I would like to believe _______
this is a story I’m telling. I need too believe it’
gives her some power, instead of the story controlling her
coping mechanism
