Chapter 7 Terms - Muscular System Flashcards
(27 cards)
Moves the body by pulling on bones of skeleton. A bundle of skeletal muscle fibers wrapped in connective tissue layers.

Skeletal muscle
Found only in the heart. Propels blood.

Cardiac muscle
Moves fluid and solids along digestive tract. Regulates diameter of small arteries.

Smooth muscle
Cell membrane
Sarcolemma
Cytoplasm
Sarcoplasm
Endoplasmic reticulum (ER)
Sarcoplasmic reticulum
A network of narrow tubules. Form passageways through the muscle fiber.
T tubules
Inside each muscle fiber, branches of T tubules encircle cylinder-shaped structures. Bundles of myofilaments.
Myofibril
The myofilaments that make up myofibrils are organized into repeating functional units. The smallest functional unit of the muscle fiber.
Sarcomere
Darker band; contains thick and thin filaments.
A band
Lighter band; contains only thin filaments.
I band
Boundary between adjacent sarcomeres.
Z disc (Z line)
Lighter band; contains only thick filaments.
H zone
Connects central part of each thick filament.
M line
Composed primarily of myosin.
Thick filament
Composed mostly of actin.
Thin filament
Makes up most of the thin filament as a twisted double strand. Contains binding sites for myosin.
Actin
Binds to tropomyosin and actin keeping complex in place. Also has binding site for calcium.
Troponin
Covers myosin binding sites on actin when muscle relaxed.
Tropomyosin
Muscle cell
Muscle fiber
A bundle of muscle fibers
Fascicle
Delicate connective tissue surrounding individual muscle fibers
Endomysium
Fibrous layer dividing skeletal muscle into bundles of fibers called muscle fascicles
Perimysium
Dense layer of collagen fibers surrounding entire muscle
Epimysium
