Henry Clay
representative of state of Kentucky, in the Corrupt Bargain= helps elect John Adams as speaker of house in exchange for the position of secretary of state, in the American system = helps craft it for national economy that is connected, Nullification Crisis= helps pass a compromise bill for the tariffs to gradually lower the cost of the taxes
American System

Election of 1824(corrupt bargain)
-Jackson wins the popular vote and electoral vote but not by the majority of the electoral
- Clay is the Speaker of Representatives and convinced the house to vote Adams as electoral vote from the House in exchange for Adams to name Clay as the Secretary of State
-unfair to Jackson
-proposed more support for Jackson
Andrew Jackson
-served 2 terms
-in election of 1828 reduced property requirements to allow for more white male to vote (common man can vote)
-Old Hickory
-known before election as a general in the war of 1812 (didn’t have a background of political and gov. experience )
-considered the champion of the common man for his support of the average working man
Spoils System
-rewarding supports of party with government roles and officials
-Jackson practiced and supported- the rotation of government positions
Indian Removal Act
-government would assist in the journey (followed and watched them) and would fund for the first year of living for them in the territory
-act to take the Indians out of American territory
-Jackson supported because he thought that the offer was generous and would benefit the lives for the Indians to practice their culture
-some Indians agreed that life would be better in other territory because they were being treated like slaves and poorly in American area
Trial of tears
-800 mile journey to take the Indians out of South and American territory to be moved to the Indian territory

-southerners argue that tariffs are way too high to support their way of economy
- Southerners, arguing that the tariff enhanced the interests of the Northern manufacturing industry at their expense

Whig Party
-formed out of hate for Andrew Jackson presidency
-thought that Andrew Jackson was over using power of executive Branch
Nullification Crisis
Cause: Tariff of Abominations
-states (South Carolina ) will nullify or void the tariff of abominations and refuse to follow it - not going to pay (thought would hurt common man)
Result of Nullification crisis - Jackson signs the Force Bill into law to use the army to not allow for SC to secede the union
Panic of 1837
-ups and downs of economy
-1/3 of population went out of work force
-National Bank crash from Jackson killing it
