Chapter 7_ 3/6/13 Flashcards
(33 cards)
Cell
Basic unit of life
Cell theory
Idea that all living things are composed of a cell
Cell membrane
A thin ,flexible barrier around the cell
Cell wall
Strong layer around the cell membrane in plants
Nucleus
Small, dense region within most nuclei. Where ribosomes begins
Prokaryotes
Single-celled microorganism that lacks a nucleus
Eukaryotes
Organisms which cells contain nuclei
Organelle
Specialized structure that performs important cellular function
Chromatin
Material visible within the nucleus
Chromosome
Threadlike structure within the nucleus containing genetic information
Nuclear envelope
Double membrane layer surrounds the nucleus of a cell
Cytoskeleton
Network of protein filaments ; helps cells maintain it’s shape
Microtubule
Hollow tube of protein that maintains cell shape; “Shape”
Microfilament
Long, thin fiber that functions in the movement and support of the cell
Ribosome
Small particle in the cell on which protein are assembled.
Endoplasmic reticulum
Internal membrane system
• Cell membrane are assembled
• proteins are modified
Golgi apparatus
Stack of membranes in the cell in which enzymes attack carbohydrates and lipids to protein
Lysosome
Cell organelle filled with enzymes needed to breakdown certain materials in the cell
Vacuole
Organelle found in the cells of plants and some other organisms that uses energy from sunlight to make energy.
Mitochondrion
Cell organelle that releases energy from stored food molecules
Lipid bilayer
Core of nearly all cell membrane is double layered sheet
Concentration
A mass of solute in a given volume of solution or mass/solution
Diffusion
Cells move from area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
Selective permeability
Allows certain substance to pass through them
