Chapter 8 - Carboxylic Acids Flashcards
(4 cards)
Define a carboxylic acid
carbonyl + hydroxyl
Liquids with high boiling points due to polarity and H bonding, water soluble and soluble in dilute bases NaOH
*most acidic = most electronegative
Which is stronger
CH3CH2-CClCOOH
CH3-CCl2-CH2COOH
Top is stronger as Cl is closer to carboxyl. Cl and NO2 stabilise and increase acidity.
e- donating groups like NH2 and OCH3 destabilise and decrease acidity
What are some of the ways to synthesise carboxylic acids
Oxidative cleavage of alkenes/alkynes
Oxidation of primary alchols and aldehydes
Hydrolysis of nitriles under strong conditions
Carboxylation of grignards
What is the relationship between acidity, ka and pka
Larger the pKa the weaker the acid
High Ka = strong acid = Low pKa
