Essentialism
a perspective that views gender as part of the nature or “essence” of one’s biological social makeup
essentialist theory
argues that humans constantly try to ensure their genes are passed on to future generations. Women tend to have a bigger investment
Gender Socialization
how society normalizes certain things to represent “what it means to be a certain gender”
4 factors that lead to the gender gap in pay
- gender discrimination (regarding men & women differently for the same job)
- women tend to be concentrated in low-wage occupations & industries (programs women select in high school & afterwards limit their choice of occupation)
- Heavy domestic responsibilities reduce women’s earnings (raising a child)
- Paid work done by women is commonly fewer valuables than men
2 types of Sexual harassment
- Quid pro quo sexual harassment (Latin meaning: one thing for another): sexual threats or bribery is made a condition of employment decisions
- Hostile environment: involves sexual jokes, touching, comments that interfere with work or create a hostile work environment
Women’s movement in Canada - 4 main streams
- Liberal feminism: the belief that non-sexist methods of socialization & education, more sharing in domestic task between men & women.
- Socialist feminism: regards to women’s relationship to the economy as the main source
- Radical feminist: male dominance & norms justifies that domination
- “the 3rd wave” emerged in mid-1980s characterized by anti-racist & postmodernist feminist
