Process of grouping or ‘fitting’ people into a category based on what we know about them

Stereotypes provide a system which guides us with interaction with others this allows us to know how to react with new people we meet.
It can be inaccurately based on incorrect or inadequate information disregarding information about the individual which is different from the stereotype.
ex-Darley & Gross research -tend to perceive person not by individual characteristics but by characteristics the person shares with the category we have put them into.
