Theory of Cognitive Development
Children’s thinking change with age. Children follow the same set sequence of 4 developmental stages.
What are the Theory of Cognitive Development stages?
1: Sensory Stage
2: Preoperational stage
3: Concrete stage
4: Formal Operation stage
Sensory stage ( Theory of Cognitive Development)
- 0-2
- Explore the environment by their senses
- Things don’t exist unless it can be seen
Preoperational Stage ( Theory of Cognitive Development)
- 2-7
- Object Permanence ( They look for it )
- Cannot think logically
Concrete Stage ( Theory of Cognitive Development)
- 7-11
- Think logically
- must be physically involved in process
Formal Operation Stage ( Theory of Cognitive Development)
- 11+
- Abstract thinking and problem solving.
- Scientific method ( observe, hypothesis, test, evaluate )
Theory of Moral Development
- Kohlberg
- universal sequence to developing morality which begins in early childhood. Everyone will follow the sequence , but no everyone will reach the end.
Social Learning Theory
- Bandura (1986)
- Observational Learning also called modelling and initiation.
- You choose who you model due to your beliefs
Nature vs Nurture
Biology (Nature) plays a role in intelligences but the environmental (nurture) especially schooling effects intelligences.
Harlow 1959 (Attachment Theory)
Attachment dictated on who feeds the child
Bowlby 1953 ( Attachment Theory )
Deprivation from a primary care giver for the first 12 months of life
Ainsworth
Classified attachment into 3 types A,B,C
What are Ainsworth’s Attachment Types ?
A: Anxious avoidance
B: Secure
C: Anxious resistance
Attachment Theory
Formation of a strong emotional bond between a mother and her baby. Failure to bond can lead to harmful effects later in in life.
