Culture
The values,beliefs, attitudes, languages, symbols, rituals, behavior, and customs unique to a particular group of people, passed from one generation to another.
Four basics of Culture
Culture is learned, Culture is shared, Culture is social in nature, and culture is dynamic and constantly changing.
Ethnicity
A classification of people based on national origin and/or culture
Example of ethnicity
Hispanic, Asian , African American, etc.
Race
Classification of people based on physical or biological characteristics, such as color of skin, hair, and eyes; facial features; blood type; and bone structure.
Example of race
black and white
cultural diversity
differences based on cultural, ethnic, and racial factors
Acculturation
process of learning the beliefs and behaviors of a dominant culture and assuming some of the characteristics
example of acculturation
A Chinese immigrant migrated to the United States. She spend time with her American co-workers and eat Americanized food. However, she still speaks her mother tongue.
Sensitivity
The ability to recognize and appreciate the personal characteristics of others, is essential in healthcare.
Example of sensitivity
For example, in some cultures such as Native. Americans or Asians, calling an adult by a first name is
not acceptable except for close friends or relatives.
Bias
a preference that inhibits impartial judgement
Example of bias
All teenagers are reckless drivers
Prejudice
strong feeling or belief about a person or subject that is formed without reviewing facts or information
Example of prejudice
Herbal remedies are a waste of money
Stereotyping
when an assumption is made that everyone in a particular group is the same

care that promotes physical, emotional, social, intellectual, and spiritual well-being

Matriarchal

parents and children and also grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins who often live close to one another and operate as a family unit
Personal space
the distance people require to feel comfortable while interacting with others
