Chapter 9 Flashcards
Physical fitness and activity assessment in adults (27 cards)
Physical fitness defines and relates to two different factors:
1) health benefits and enable citizens to deal with the physical challanges.
2) the improvement and maintenance of physical activivty and fitness ad an important step in developing healthy lifestyle behaviors.
Epidemiology
branch of medicine which examines the incidence, prevalence, and distribution of disease
Cardiorespiratory endurance
body’s ability to extract and use oxygen in manner that permits continuous exercise, physical work or physical activities
Physical activity and cadriorespiratory endurance are related to
the risk of CVD
Aerobic power (or aerobic capacity)
ability to supply oxygen to the working muscles during physical activity
Lab methods
- involves expensive and sophisticated equipment
- involves exacting test protocols
- these tests are often criterion-referenced
The single most reliable and valid measure of aerobic capacity
the maximal oxygen consumption or VO2max
Vo2max
measure of the maximal amount of oxygen that can be used by a person during exhaustive exercise
Maximal Exercise Performance
- requires exhaustive exercise but does not require the metabolic measurement of expired gases
- the test is greatly simplified and expensive metabolic equipment is not necessary
Submaximal Exercise Testin
- estimates are based on the linear realtionship among heart rate, workload, and VO2max
-requirs less than maximal effort
Flexibility
- a single overall test of flexibility is available
- flexibility is specific to the joint or joints being measured
Absolute endurance
a measurement of the repetitive perfomance at a fixed resistance (for example, perfoming the max number of repetitions at a fixed weight of 100 pounds)
Relative endurance
a measurement of the repetitive performance related to maximum strength
BMI is a function of
height and weight
Relative risk
refers to a comparison of risk of morbidity and mortality between groups of people
Static strength
the ability of a muscle to contract and hold a position against a resistance without changing length.
Dynamic strength
the ability of muscles or muscle groups to repeatedly contract and exert force over a while, often involving movement and resistance
Residual volume
the air left in the lungs after max forced expiration of air
SHOULD BE MEASURED, not predicted or estimated
The waist-hip girth ratio is used
because it assesses excessive body fat on the trunk
Skinfold tests are used to measure body composition. The method used to validate skinfold measures is
concurent validity
Healthy People 2020
presents the objectives for improving the health of U.S. citizens
Power is
amount of work performed in a fixed amount of time
VO2max and VO2peak are
highly related
What are you probably testing if you use a cycle ergometer, step tests, and treadmill tests in your adult fitness testing program?
