Chapter 9 Energy Flashcards
(14 cards)
renewable resource
natural sources. EX: solar, wind, geothermal energy
non-renewable resource
have limited supply. EX: coal, oil, natural gas
How is coal formed?
- Millions of years ago
- energy stored in giant plants that were alive millions of years ago
- water and dirt pile o top of dead plants
- pressure and heat build up
- chemical and physical changes would push out oxygen
define resource
“the whole pie” EX: air, water, wood
define reserve
“the small piece of the pie”
how is oil formed
- millions of years ago bacteria was formed
- they became buried deeper and deeper
- amount of pressure and heat will make the material turn into oil
what are the four type of coal
- Anthracite
- Bituminous
- Subbituminous
- Lignite
what is ethanol
a grain alcohol that can be blended with gasoline and used in motor vehicles
energy conservation
behavior that results in not using energy at all. EX: turning off the lights when leaving the room
energy efficiency
using less energy. EX: compact fluorescent light bulbs
what is biomass energy
fuel from burning waste.
what is hydropower
converts natural flow of water into energy
what is geothermal energy
heat from the ground used to make energy
what is tidal energy
converts energy from tides into energy
